What Is Touch Typing?

Touch typing uses all ten fingers, each assigned to specific keys. Your fingers rest on the "home row" (ASDF JKL;) and reach out to nearby keys. This method is fundamentally different from "hunt and peck" typing, where you look at the keyboard and use 2–4 fingers.

Step-by-Step: Get Started

1. Open the tool — Go to our Typing Tutor.
2. Start with home row — Begin with the ASDF JKL; keys. The tutor shows which finger should press which key.
3. Follow the visual guide — An on-screen keyboard highlights the correct key and finger. Focus on accuracy, not speed.
4. Progress through lessons — Once you master the home row, the tutor introduces top row, bottom row, numbers, and special characters.
5. Practice daily — 10–15 minutes per day is more effective than one long weekly session.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Peeking at the keyboard — Resist the urge. It slows down muscle memory development.
• Rushing for speed — Accuracy first. Speed comes naturally after muscle memory is established.
• Skipping the pinky fingers — The weakest fingers handle important keys. Train them early.
